An intriguing writing table raised on four finely turned mahogany legs. The carcass is constructed of pine with a thick mahogany veneer whilst the top is formed from a single board of mahogany that has been veneered with flame mahogany and crossbanded in, what appears to be, arbutus wood, or similar.

The top lifts to reveal various reciprocals for inkwells, pens and the like, accompanied by a blue baize covered writing surface which further lifts to reveal a compartmentalised interior. This is retained behind two dummy cock-beaded drawers which sit atop a single broad pine-lined drawer which runs smoothly and bears a simple inlaid escutcheon.

The surface is a menagerie of colour and texture – testament to a life of service. The top and legs retain a wonderful lustre whilst other areas are grubby (in the best sense), accompanied by a natural crackling to the polish on the right hand side of the carcass caused by historic heat exposure.

The top, when erect, serves as reflective surface – meaning secret love letters could be penned in the dead of night!

Solid and usable. Lock not functioning but present. Veneer patch to the top and to two areas of crossbanding. Some minor veneer loss elsewhere commensurate with age. Minor ink staining and graffiti to the interior of the drawer. Small isolated paint flecks in places.

British Isles, circa 1840.
