A monumental silver salver with later repousse ornament.

Made by renowned London silversmith Ebenezer Coker and bearing the date letter for 1773 this salver started life as a much plainer piece of silverware. Raised on four strong gadrooned feet and adorned with a similar gadrooned rim.

However, come the middle of the 19th century this piece was ‘updated’ and decorated with all the fussiness and busyness that found favour at the time. This repousse work features four evenly placed masks, foliate scrolls, c-scrolls and an abundance of fruits, flowers and birds.

Centrally, an inscription reads as follows:

This Set of Salvers
PRESENTED
By The Governors of the
Markethill & Mountnorris Dispensary
To
Joseph M Lynn Esq M.D.
In testimony to their approval of his laborious
and skilful attention to the poor of that
neighbourhood for the space of
Twenty Years
MDCCCLII

Joseph Marshall Lynn M.D. settled in Markethill, County Armagh, in 1831 as doctor after a distinguished career in medicine at several universities throughout the British Isles. Having come from a Methodist background he established a church in the town in 1833.

The presentation of this particular salver in 1852 marks twenty years of faithful service to that community and most likely aligns with his appointment as Medical Officer for the area of that same year. Following this he moved to Armagh in 1854 as Surgeon-Major to the Armagh Militia, 3rd Battalion of Royal Irish Fusiliers, and as a leader in Armagh Methodist Church.

He died at the age of 94 years on the 10th October 1899.

The salver, which originally formed part of a set, weighs 1871grams and remains as testament to the esteem in which this gentleman was held.

Offered in unpolished condition, full hallmarks are present to the reverse although are slightly obscured due to the later repousse work.

Made in London, England, 1773 with later ornament and engraving circa 1852.

Diameter 41cm
