A deportment chair constructed of beech retaining its original gently worn simulated rosewood finish.
Used to ‘correct’ a child’s posture – such chairs followed an initial design by Sir Astley Cooper (1768-1841).
The bar-shaped top rail and ornamental lyre to the back are typical of the Regency period. The rear legs are chamfered and expressively splayed rising to thoughtfully turned uprights. The front stretchers and legs exhibit similarly turned decoration and terminate in subtly splayed feet.
Solid and usable (if you dare!). Some old flight holes to the seat frame and some historic repairs throughout.
English, circa 1820.
