A rare miniature Irish dresser emulating a form associated with standard-size examples hailing from Ulster. Most notably exhibiting sloped ‘shoulders’ and a slightly pronounced ‘head’.
Constructed of choice mahogany affixed by means of delicate steel screws with an attractive patina throughout.
The symmetrical fretwork cornice contrasts the smaller repeat pattern fretwork gallery found on the lower shelf. The ‘bed’ features a guardrail, as does the middle shelf.
Dry backboards with some historic warping.
Acquired by the previous owner from ‘Knock House’ in Knockloughrim, County Londonderry, where it possibly resided from new.
A culturally significant piece of Irish furniture transcending the classes and giving a glimpse into the esteem in which this form was held.
Some minor repair and losses to the lower fretwork gallery. Both guardrails are contemporary replacements. General wear commensurate with age.
Irish, from Ulster, circa 1850.
