A scarce child-size stick chair of diminutive and sculptural form.

Constructed of mixed timbers, the curved top rail is of elm, the interlocking arms of beech, the simply turned spindles are of pine, the bevelled slab seat is of sycamore and the turned legs are of ash.

Interestingly, this scaled down version is nearly identical to a 'normal size' chair I owned last year – without doubt hailing from the same workshop.

Similar examples with interlocking arms are illustrated in Kinmonth’s ‘Irish Country Furniture and Furnishings 1700-2000’, page 119, figure 113, and page 120, figure 116.

Several flight holes present that have been treated, historic damage to the left end of the top rail and one spindle has been historically replaced. Old nailed 'repairs' in places. All is sound and usable.

Irish, from Ulster, most likely made in County Antrim, second half of the 19th century.
