A small fireside chair with an ebonised show-wood frame bearing the mark of Holland & Sons to the interior of the rear right leg.

Overall, of superior quality in the aesthetic manner – the cushioned arched back is supported by a run of five turned spindles framed by reeded uprights. The front legs exhibit ring turned ornament whilst the rear are splayed in perfect proportion – all raised on quality gilt brass castors.

Most remarkably two panels of the original intricate needlework upholstery have been preserved and utilised following, what appears to be, a very recent re-covering of the chair.

These are Eastern in their ornament, which was high fashion at the time. The front seat rail sees opposing dragons flying over rough seas whilst fish, flowers and foliage adorn the back.

Solid and usable. Evidence of a discreet repair where the side seat rails meet the back uprights at both sides.

England, circa 1870.
