A substantial cut glass inkwell featuring a cold painted bronze mouse perched atop its brass lid.
The mouse, in the manner of wares produced by Franz Bergmann although bearing no apparent mark, originally served as a pen wipe. It’s back would have been laden with boar bristles for this purpose.
It perfectly encapsulates the Victorian love of nature and novelty!
Historic surface chip to the glass at the rear right corner. Small loss to the mouse’s left ear accompanied by some wear to the paint commensurate with age.
Austria, circa 1900.
